1–3 ppm is the sweet spot for a saltwater pool.

Yes, you still need to test free chlorine even in a saltwater pool. The salt cell generates chlorine, but it’s not maintenance-free.

Most pool pros and manufacturers recommend 1–3 parts per million (ppm) of free chlorine. That’s the same range as a traditional chlorine pool. Go below 1 ppm and you risk algae and bacteria. Above 3 ppm is wasteful and can irritate skin and eyes.

The salt system just produces chlorine steadily instead of you dumping it in all at once. You still need to check levels weekly. The actual salt concentration (usually 2700–3400 ppm) is a separate number — don’t confuse the two.

Also: if your chlorine level drops too low even with the cell running, check your cyanuric acid (stabilizer) levels. That keeps the sun from burning off your chlorine.

Stick with 1–3 ppm, test regularly, and your pool will be fine.
