16GB is still fine for streaming and most VR
No.
4K video streaming doesn’t care about RAM—it’s all about your GPU decoder and internet speed. 16GB is plenty. You could have 8GB and still stream 4K without stutter as long as your GPU can handle it.
VR gaming is a little more complicated. Most current VR titles run fine on 16GB. There are a few edge cases—Microsoft Flight Simulator with heavy mods, maybe Star Citizen in VR if that ever works—where 32GB helps. But for the vast majority of VR games (Beat Saber, Half-Life: Alyx, Boneworks), 16GB is the sweet spot. The bottleneck is almost always the GPU.
If you’re upgrading just for these two things, save your money. You’ll see more real improvement from a faster GPU or a better headset.
Future-proofing is a different story. But for right now? 16GB is not holding you back.
