16GB RAM is worth it for Lightroom.
Yes.
Lightroom is a memory hog, even for “light” editing. If you’re on 8GB right now, you’ve probably noticed the lag when you switch modules or apply a preset. That’s Lightroom constantly swapping data to disk. Bumping to 16GB gives the app room to breathe. Your catalog, history states, and previews all sit in RAM instead of thrashing your SSD.
“Light editing” still means you’re loading raw files from a modern camera. A 24MP image takes about 50MB in memory. Now multiply that by the 50 photos you scroll through before picking one. Then add the Develop module’s multiple preview sizes and 1:1 renders. It adds up fast. 8GB works until it doesn’t. 16GB feels smooth.
If you’re on a laptop where RAM is soldered, order the upgrade when you buy. It’s one of those things you’ll thank yourself for every day.
Future you will appreciate not waiting for the beach ball.
