2017 Piper Mono Vinyl: Original Masters, but Not the Single Mix of Astronomy Domine
The 2017 mono reissue of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn was cut from the original 1967 mono master tapes—no debate there. It’s the closest we’ve gotten to the original LP sound on vinyl in decades.
But if you’re hunting for the single version of “Astronomy Domine” with Syd Barrett’s vocal pushed way forward and that extra reverb, you won’t find it here. That mix was only pressed on the 1967 single (b/w “Flaming”) and never made the album. The reissue uses the standard album mix, where the vocal sits more in the band’s swirl.
