2023 Dark Side Picture Disc vs. 2016 Back Catalogue: Different Masters, Different Sound
The 2023 50th anniversary picture disc of The Dark Side of the Moon was cut directly from the original analog master tapes by Bernie Grundman—but it is not the same half-speed master used for the 2016 Back Catalogue pressing. That 2016 version was also cut by Grundman, but at half-speed (33⅓ RPM, not 45), and it’s widely considered the best modern digital-era reissue. The 2023 picture disc uses a fresh, non-half-speed cut.
Sonically, the 2016 Back Catalogue pressing has noticeably better clarity, quieter surfaces, and a wider dynamic range—it’s a standard-weight black vinyl record designed for fidelity. The picture disc, by nature, has higher background noise (surface rumble and some low-end mush) because of the laminated artwork layer.
