32GB helps if your compiles are hitting swap.

Only if you’re actually running out of memory.

Compile time is mostly CPU and I/O bound. More RAM won’t make your compiler run faster unless right now your system is thrashing — swapping memory to disk because it ran out. When that happens, everything grinds to a halt. 32GB fixes that.

But if you’re building a typical React or Rails app, 16GB is usually plenty. Check your memory usage during a build. If you’re under 80% utilization, more RAM won’t change compile times. If you’re pegged at 90%+ and swap is active, 32GB will make a real difference.

The heavy users who benefit: C++/Rust/Android developers with large codebases, anyone running Docker containers or VMs alongside their IDE, and people working on monorepos with many services.

16GB is fine for most web dev. 32GB is for when you know you need it.
