32GB is enough for 4K. Go 64GB for 8K.

Probably. For most 4K editing in DaVinci Resolve, 32GB is enough and 64GB is overkill. For 8K, 64GB is the safer bet – but it really depends on what you’re throwing at it.

DaVinci Resolve is a memory hog, but not as bad as people claim. A standard 4K timeline with basic color grading and cuts runs fine on 32GB. I’ve edited hour-long projects this way without swapping. The real RAM demand comes from Fusion effects, noise reduction, and high-res raw footage (like BRAW or RED). If you’re doing those on 4K, you’ll still be okay with 32GB – you just might need to cache or render in place more often.

8K is where 32GB starts to choke. Even simple playback of 8K ProRes or H.265 will push you past 32GB fast, especially if you have multiple layers or effects. 64GB gives you headroom without constantly hitting the swap disk. If you’re editing 8K professionally, just go 64GB – it’s not that much more money compared to the cost of your storage or GPU.

Final thought: 32GB is the sweet spot for 4K editing. Don’t spend on 64GB unless you know you’ll hit 8K or heavy Fusion work – and if you do, Future You will thank you.
