32GB is worth it for 4K or compressed codecs.
Yes, 32GB will give you noticeably smoother scrubbing and previews in DaVinci Resolve compared to 16GB—but only if you’re working with 4K footage or heavily compressed codecs like H.264/H.265. For 1080p ProRes or DNxHR, 16GB is usually fine.
DaVinci is a RAM hog. It caches frames in memory for playback, and when you hit 16GB, the system starts swapping to disk (or worse, dropping frames). With 32GB, you get a much bigger buffer. Scrubbing becomes responsive, timeline previews stay fluid, and you’re less likely to see that yellow “cache” bar fill up mid-edit.
But RAM isn’t the only factor. A fast GPU and SSD make a bigger difference for real-time playback of compressed footage. If you’re on a machine with a slow hard drive or integrated graphics, 32GB won’t fix choppy previews by itself.
So: if you’re cutting 4K or anything that chokes on a laptop, get 32GB. If you’re strictly doing 1080p ProRes light work, save the money.
Future You will thank you the first time you scrub through a multicam timeline.
