A 2mm pad is basically a glorified mousepad. It’ll protect the desk, but it does almost nothing to level out small imperfections or absorb vibration from a heavy board. If your desk has even a tiny bump or dip, that 2mm pad won’t fill it, and your keyboard will rock or wobble while you type.

5mm gives you enough material to smooth out minor unevenness. It also deadens the thock and clack sounds better, which is nice if you’re using linears or tactiles. That said, not all 5mm pads are equal—if it’s super soft foam, a heavy keyboard can sink in and feel mushy. Look for something with a dense rubber or neoprene core (often called “mouse desk pads” or “gaming desk mats”). The firmness matters more than the number.
