64GB RAM is overkill for a 1440p gaming rig

Yes.

64GB of RAM is overkill for a gaming PC with an RTX 4090 that only plays at 1440p. Even the most demanding games today rarely use more than 16–20GB total. The 4090 is bottlenecked at 1440p anyway—you’re not getting the full performance out of that card unless you move to 4K.

32GB is the sweet spot. It gives you headroom for background apps, Discord, browser tabs, and future games without wasting money. 64GB only makes sense if you also do heavy video editing, 3D rendering, or run multiple virtual machines. For pure gaming, it’s just throwing cash at a number that looks big in RGB.

If you’re dead set on maxing out, go 32GB with fast timings (DDR5-6000 CL30 or similar). That’s where you’ll actually feel a difference, if any. The extra 32GB will sit there doing nothing except making your wallet lighter.

Don’t spend the extra money unless you have a non-gaming reason to use it. The 4090 already cost you enough.
