A 1 HP pump is probably right for your above-ground pool.
Yes, a 1 HP pump will work for most above-ground pools up to about 24 feet across. Anything bigger is usually overkill for a standard round or oval above-ground setup.
The reason is simple: above-ground pools are shallow and don’t have a ton of plumbing resistance. A 1 HP pump gives enough flow to turn over the water in 8-10 hours, which is the target. Going to 1.5 HP can actually cause problems — too much flow can suck the liner inward, stress the filter, and waste electricity.
If you have a really large above-ground (like 30+ feet) or a sand filter that’s rated for higher flow, you might need 1.5 HP. But 90% of people are fine with 1 HP. If you’re between sizes, go smaller. You can always run it longer.
Unless your pool is huge or you have a high-flow filter, don’t overthink it — 1 HP is the sweet spot.
