A 4x4x3 container fits a whole apple.
Yes, plenty of lunch boxes fit a whole apple or orange without squishing — you just need one with a main compartment that’s at least 4 inches wide and 3 inches tall.
Most apples and oranges run 2.75 to 3.25 inches in diameter. So you don’t need anything crazy big, but you do need some clearance so the lid closes without pressing down on the fruit. A container with interior dimensions around 4x4x3 inches gives you that breathing room. That’s roughly a 4-cup capacity food storage container, or any bento box with a “large” main section.
The tricky part is that many cute bento boxes prioritize shallow, flat compartments for sandwiches and snacks. They’ll be 2 inches tall at most, and that’s a no-go. So before buying, check the inside height — that’s the dimension people overlook. A standard deli container or a glass meal-prep dish with a domed lid works perfectly.
Don’t overthink it. Measure your fruit, measure the container, and make sure there’s a little space above it. That’s the whole trick.
Your apple will thank you for not buying a shallow lunch box.
