The unusual instrument for the intro of “Money” is a cash register. The bass riff itself is just Roger Waters playing a Fender Precision Bass—nothing unusual there. The signature sound comes from the tape loop of a cash register opening, closing, and coins clinking, which David Gilmour and the engineer created by spinning the tape reel manually. That four-beat loop sets up the famous 7/4 timing before the bass even enters. People remember the cash register because it’s
