Wide brims without straps act like sails. A stiff breeze turns your nice sun hat into a frisbee. I’ve chased too many of those down the beach to pretend otherwise.

Your best bets: a packable straw hat with an adjustable chin cord (Tilley or similar), or a canvas bucket hat with a drawstring. The bucket hat is less elegant but more reliable. The straw one breathes better. Both stay on your head.

If you already own a hat you love, buy a hat clip with a lanyard. Ten bucks, works great.
