A clean air filter can stay for winter storage

A clean air filter is fine to leave in place for winter storage — it won’t let moisture or dust in while the engine sits.

The filter’s only job is keeping crud out while the engine is running. When the machine is parked, no air is moving through it, so a clean filter isn’t going to absorb moisture or suck in dust. That worry is mostly a myth. Actual storage moisture problems come from condensation in the fuel tank and crankcase, not from the airbox.

If you’re storing a small engine for months, spend your effort on things that matter: fill the tank, add fuel stabilizer, change the oil if it’s old, and plug the intake and exhaust if mice are a threat in your shed. A dirty filter won’t hurt anything while the engine just sits there either — you can swap it in spring and it’ll cost you nothing extra.

Save the new filter for when you’re ready to run it again. That’s when it earns its keep.
