A full lunch box survives the hike
The real trick to a hike lunch that won’t get crushed is packing the box completely full — empty space is what lets things shift, bump, and squish.
Think about what actually happens out there: the box tips, the pack jostles, and anything with room to move slams into whatever is below it. If you can shake the box and hear things sliding around, the sandwich loses. Fill those gaps with a cloth napkin, a bag of trail mix, or even crumpled paper towel. Cushioning is just dead air replaced with something soft.
Use gravity smart. Heaviest stuff on the bottom — water bottle, apple, boiled egg. Softest stuff on top. Chips, sandwiches, and berries go in a hard-sided container even if your lunch box itself is rigid, because that inner box spreads the load across its walls. And if you’re using a soft cooler bag, pack the lunch on top of your backpack gear, not under it.
Your sandwich will be fine. The banana was never going to make it, but nobody has solved that one.
