A hot extension cord is a fire risk you can feel.

The cord or plug will be warm or hot to the touch — that’s the main sign. If it’s uncomfortable to hold for more than a few seconds, it’s overheating.

Other clues: a burning smell (like hot plastic), visible melting or discoloration near the plug, or the cord feels stiff or brittle. Sometimes you’ll hear a faint buzzing or see lights flicker when the cord is in use.

Don’t ignore any of these. Unplug it immediately and replace the cord. Extension cords are cheap; house fires are not.
