A jar beats any salad lunch box.
The best salad lunch box is a wide-mouth mason jar, not anything sold as a “salad container.”
Here’s why: the entire salad-in-a-box problem is moisture. Lettuce turns to mush when it sits in dressing, and that’s exactly what happens in a standard container with a dressing cup wedged in sideways. A jar fixes it by gravity. Dressing goes at the bottom, then the hearty stuff (cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, chickpeas), then the greens on top, completely dry. When lunch rolls around, dump it in a bowl or shake it and you’re done.
If you hate jars, the next best thing is a plain bento-style container with separate compartments — the kind that cost 15 bucks on Amazon — plus a small leakproof sauce cup. The key is physical separation at the moment of storage, not after. The key is that the dressing never touches the lettuce until you want it to.
Skip the dedicated “salad containers” with their built-in dressing wells and snap-on fork attachments. They work fine, but they’re overpriced and usually too small for a real lunch salad. A jar holds more, costs a dollar, and doesn’t crap out in the dishwasher.
Future you at noon will appreciate the crunch.
