A lunch box without plastic is easier than you think

You can pack a completely waste-free lunch with one good container, a cloth napkin, and a little forethought.

The trick is to stop thinking in single items. Instead of a sandwich in a baggie, a yogurt in a cup, and a snack in a wrapper, think in compartments. A bento-style box with dividers holds a whole meal in one lid. Sandwich on one side, apple slices in the next, crackers stacked on top. No bags required.

For wet or messy stuff, use small silicone cups or tiny stainless steel containers. They’re cheap, wash in seconds, and last years. If you want to wrap something — a burrito, a quesadilla — beeswax wrap works great, and plain parchment paper is compostable if you’re not fussy. Drinks go in an insulated bottle. Done.

You don’t need a full kit or a fancy brand. One container and two or three smaller ones cover 90% of lunches. The first week feels slightly awkward, then the plastic version starts to feel dumb.

Future You also saves money, because you never buy sandwich bags again.
