A Mayo Barrier Saves Every Sandwich
The fix for soggy lunch-box sandwiches is to build a moisture barrier between the bread and the tomato or cucumber.
Tomatoes and cucumbers are mostly water. They leak. So either you keep them off the bread or you give the bread a raincoat. A thin layer of mayo, butter, cream cheese, or even hummus on both slices does a lot. It’s not about flavor. It’s about coating the bread so the water never gets in.
Next, dry the slices. Pat the tomato and cucumber with a paper towel, salt them lightly, let them sit for a minute, then blot the water off. Salting pulls out extra liquid before it hits the bread. Even just patting plus mayo will save most sandwiches.
The pro move is the one that never fails: keep the tomato or cucumber in a tiny container and put it on at lunchtime. But if you need grab-and-go, layer a slice of cheese or lettuce between the bread and the wet stuff. Lettuce works like a little tarp. Just don’t let the wet slice touch the bread directly.
Future-you at lunchtime will appreciate the crunch.
