A pop-up tent and a life jacket. Everything else is optional.

Yes, you need both. But here’s the thing: not all shade and flotation are created equal.

For shade, skip the umbrella. It will either blow away or stab someone. Get a pop-up beach tent with UPF 50+. It takes 30 seconds to set up, stays put with sand bags, and gives you a cool spot to nurse, nap, or hide from the sun while the kids dig holes.

For flotation, avoid those inflatable arm floaties. They give parents false confidence and kids a dangerous sense of ability. A proper Coast Guard-approved life jacket (the kind with a head-flotation collar) is the only thing that buys you real peace of mind when the waves roll in. Have them wear it on the wet sand too—toddlers can drown in six inches of water.

Add a rash guard and a bucket and you’re done. You don’t need the wagon, the inflatable pool, or the sand-proof blanket that works as well as a regular blanket.

If it doesn’t provide shade or help them float, it’s probably just more stuff to carry back.
