A real bento box fits adults — just not American-adult portions
A real bento box fits adult portions fine — you just have to accept that “adult” means what a Japanese adult eats, not what a deli serves.
The whole idea of bento-style eating is that lunch is a composed plate: a little rice, a little protein, some vegetables. That works out to roughly 500–700 calories in a 500–700ml box. That’s a normal lunch for most adults. It’s only small compared to the American default of sandwich + chips + cookie + soda.
