A real chainsaw sharpening kit needs more than round files

A quality chainsaw sharpening kit includes a raker gauge and flat file, not just round files. The round file is only half the job.

If you sharpen the cutters but ignore the depth gauges, the chain will barely bite and you’ll be pressing harder than you should. A raker gauge tells you when the depth gauges are too high, and the flat file brings them back down. Most cheap kits skip this, which means you’re only getting a cosmetic sharpen.

Beyond that, look for a file guide or clamp. It holds the round file at the proper angle relative to the cutter, so every tooth gets the same cut. Freehanding is fine if you’re experienced, but a guide makes it repeatable and prevents you from ruining a chain in one session.

That’s the core: round file, flat file, raker gauge, and a file guide. Everything else—gloves, a brush, a bar clamp—is nice but optional. If a kit has those four things, it’s worth buying.

Your chain will cut better and last twice as long. That’s worth a few extra bucks.
