A snug container is the whole secret.

Keeping sandwich bread from getting squished is mostly about the container, not the bread.

The biggest mistake people make is using a box that’s too big. If there’s room to slide, there’s room to get crushed. Get a rigid container that fits the sandwich almost exactly. No bread baggies, no soft wrappers, no cereal bowl. Snug fit means the bread holds still when the lunchbox gets thrown around.

Pack it on top, always. Heavy stuff—yogurt cups, fruit, a water bottle—goes at the bottom of the bag. Sandwich goes in last, on top. Gravity does the rest. You’d be surprised how much squish is just your heavy lunch sitting on the bread all morning.

If you want extra insurance, one paper towel inside the container adds a little cushion and catches condensation. It’s not a substitute for the right-size box, but it doesn’t hurt.

Pack bread like it owes you money, and people will stop asking if you dropped your lunch.
