A soft cooler with detachable straps beats any hard lunch box
For a picnic or hiking day trip, get a soft-side cooler with a detachable shoulder strap — it’s the best lunch box option and it’s not close.
Hard lunch boxes and wicker baskets are dead weight. They’re stiff, awkward to carry, and once you’re on a trail you’ll be switching arms every five minutes. Soft coolers weigh almost nothing, crush down when empty, and keep your food cold if you pre-chill them the night before.
The detachable strap matters more than you’d think. Look for a bag where the shoulder strap clips on and off — OtterBox’s Trooper line, RTIC, Engel, and a bunch of Carhartt bags all do this. Strap off, it sits neatly at a picnic or slides under a car seat. Strap on, it rides crossbody on a hike. No need to overpay for a Yeti unless you want the flex; the cheaper soft coolers hold ice just fine.
Now, “attach to a cooler.” If you mean clipping a lunch box onto your main cooler, don’t overthink it. There’s no universal mounting system, so buy a bag with D-rings or webbing loops and use a carabiner. Some accessories like the Yeti Sidekick mount directly onto Yeti coolers, but carabiner-on-loops works with anything in about five seconds. And if you meant strapping it to a hiking backpack, same answer: loops, carabiner, done.
Soft and modular beats hard and pretty every time.
