A soft cooler with thick insulation is fine for groceries.

A hard rotomolded cooler (like Yeti or RTIC) is overkill — they’re heavy, expensive, and not worth it for a 30-minute drive. You don’t need ice retention for days. You need a bag that keeps cold things cold until you get home.

Look for a soft cooler with at least 1-inch thick foam walls and a good zipper seal. Brands like Igloo, Coleman, or even Ozark Trail (Walmart’s brand) do the job for $30–60. If you really want to stretch, a cheap styrofoam cooler works but it’s single-use and leaky.

The real trick? Pre-chill the cooler with a bag of ice for 10 minutes before loading groceries. And keep frozen stuff in its own insulated bag inside.

Spend $40, not $400. Your groceries will survive the drive.
