A steel tiffin beats glass and bamboo for zero-waste lunches

Stainless steel is the clear winner for a zero-waste, plastic-free lunch box.

It’s the only option that’s durable enough to last decades, light enough to carry every day, and fully recyclable at the end of its life. Glass also works but it’s heavy and shatters when you inevitably drop it. Bamboo and wooden containers look nice but they absorb smells, stain easily, and don’t hold up to daily use.

The best setup is a stacked stainless steel tiffin — two or three tiers, one lid. The classic Indian design has been doing this for a century. You get separation for a main dish and sides without packing multiple containers. For the stuff that doesn’t fit in a box — sandwiches, snacks, fruit — use beeswax wraps and cotton produce bags instead of zip-loc bags. Pair it with a metal fork and spoon and a cloth napkin and you’re fully plastic-free.
