A week-6 checkpoint is about adjusting, not quitting

A week-6 checkpoint lets you adjust course before you’ve wasted half the quarter — and the trick is framing it as a data review, not a failure analysis.

The reason week 6 works is because you have enough data to see if your original plan was delusional, but you still have 6 weeks left to actually do something about it. Waiting until week 8 or 9 means you’re just hoping. That’s not strategy, that’s vibes.

Here’s how to run it without feeling like you’re bailing:

Pull three things. First, actual progress against the goal — not feelings, just numbers. Second, what changed externally since you set the goal (new priorities, team capacity, market shifts). Third, what you’d need to be true for the goal to be achievable by week 12. Then ask one question: Is the goal still realistic with the time and resources we actually have? Not the resources you wish you had.

If the answer is no, you don’t kill the goal. You re-scope or re-resource. Maybe you cut scope to an MVP. Maybe you ask for help. Maybe you push the deadline. But you make the call now, while there’s still time to do something about it. The people who fail are the ones who sit on bad news until week 10.

Treat it like a steering wheel, not a kill switch.
