Adding a second stick gives you dual-channel benefits.
Yes, if you match them right.
Dual-channel is exactly what it sounds like — two identical sticks running in parallel. If you add a 16GB stick to an existing 16GB stick that has the same speed, timings, and voltage, you’ll get the full bandwidth boost. Most modern motherboards will automatically switch to dual-channel mode once you populate the correct slots (usually slots 2 and 4).
The catch: mismatched sticks can still work but might not run dual-channel for the whole 32GB. Some boards will run the first 16GB in dual-channel and the rest in single. Others might just run single-channel entirely. It’s messy.
Best practice: buy the exact same model or a matched kit. If you already have one stick, look up the part number and buy another. It’s cheap insurance.
Future you will thank you for the memory bandwidth boost.
