Aim for one full pool turnover every 8–12 hours.

It depends on your pool size, but the general rule is one complete turnover per day. That means the pump moves a volume of water equal to your entire pool in 8 to 12 hours. Your flow rate in gallons per minute (GPM) is just: pool volume (gallons) ÷ desired turnover hours ÷ 60.

Measure it with a flow meter (installed in the pipe) or the bucket test: time how many seconds it takes to fill a 5-gallon bucket from a return jet. If it takes 10 seconds, that’s 0.5 gallons per second, or 30 GPM. Then check if that matches your target.

Most residential pools land between 30–60 GPM. Go too high and you waste electricity without better filtration. Too low and the water gets cloudy. Adjust with a valve or pump speed if you have a variable-speed pump.

More flow isn’t always better — it can waste energy and wear out your filter faster.
