Air is the real fix for a stinky lunch box
The main reason your lunch box keeps smelling is that you’re putting it away damp, and that lets bacteria keep doing their thing.
The smell isn’t really “food odor” — it’s bacteria. And bacteria love warm, damp, enclosed spaces. So after you wash the box, don’t snap the lid on and shove it in the cupboard. Dry it with a towel, then leave it open on the counter overnight. If you’ve got a sunny spot, put it there. Sunlight kills bacteria way better than any lemon juice.
If the stink is already baked in, a splash of white vinegar or a baking soda paste will help pull it out. But here’s the honest part: if the box is plastic and scratched up, you’re fighting a losing battle. Plastic is porous — it holds onto oils from curry, fish, garlic, whatever. Once it starts holding smells, no amount of scrubbing puts that genie back in the bottle.
Switch to glass or stainless steel and you can skip this whole problem. The end.
