Airtight beats anything you spray on the bag
The only reliable way to keep lunch smells out of your backpack is to stop them at the container, not the bag.
All those sprays and baking soda tricks only mask the smell after it’s already soaked into the fabric. The smell is just vapor escaping from your food, so if the container isn’t sealed, it’s going straight into the weave of your bag. Kill the leak, kill the smell.
Get a container with a real seal — glass with a rubber gasket or a good plastic clamshell. If you’re carrying something aggressively smelly like fish, eggs, or curry, put the sealed container inside a zippered thermal lunch bag, then drop that whole thing in your backpack. Double-layer it and your bag won’t know lunch happened.
Two smaller things: wash your lunch container every day, because yesterday’s residue smells even worse than today’s food. And don’t leave the empty container sitting in your bag all afternoon — get it out. If your backpack already smells, dump a little baking soda in it overnight, and if it’s machine washable, just wash it.
Your bag will thank you.
