Alan Styles, Steve O'Rourke, and the invisible architects of Pink Floyd's live shows

The people who made Pink Floyd’s stadium-sized spectacles actually work are almost never in the photos. Steve O’Rourke wasn’t just the manager—he was the band’s longtime fixer and road-trip driver in the early days, the guy who kept Syd Barrett functioning long enough to finish The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Later he became the manager who quarterbacked The Dark Side of the Moon tour logistics and famously negotiated the band’s split with Roger Waters.

Alan Styles was the production manager and sound engineer who turned the band’s impossible ideas into something that could tour. He helped design the circular screen for The Wall shows, figured out how to fly the giant inflatables, and once had to manually re-sync the quadraphonic tape system mid-show when it glitched. These were the people who made sure the pig floated, the bed spun, and the bell tolled exactly on time.
