Anchor habits to trigger events, not clock times

When your schedule is unpredictable, tracking habits by time of day will fail. Instead, tie each habit to a specific trigger that reliably happens in your day — something like “after I pour my first coffee” or “right before I clock out.”

Shift work and irregular meetings destroy the assumption that 8am or 6pm means anything. You’ll end up skipping habits because “it’s 10am but I’m still in bed after a night shift.” That’s not a failure of willpower — it’s a failure of design.

For Q1, try this: list three to five anchors that exist every day no matter what (first meal, first break, end of shift, walk to the car). Attach one habit to each. Keep the tracker simple — a paper list or a single note on your phone. No streaks, no goals about doing it every day. Just ask: did I do it after the trigger today? Yes/no.

Variable schedules need flexible systems, not rigid streaks.
