Arrive before 11 or forget it.
Probably not if you show up at noon. Shaded picnic areas—the kind under big trees or a pavilion—are the first things claimed. On a nice day, families camp out with coolers and blankets by 10 AM.
Check the park map online first. Many parks have designated picnic shelters you can reserve, but free ones are a free-for-all. If you just want shade, bring your own: a pop-up canopy or umbrella. You can eat on a blanket anywhere in the grass that isn’t roped off.
Better yet, call the park office and ask what time the benches fill up. Rangers know the rhythm.
Your lunch shouldn’t feel like Black Friday.
