Backwash when the pressure climbs.

Backwash the filter when the pressure gauge reads 8–10 psi above the clean starting pressure. That’s the main cleaning move. Anything else is overcomplicating it.

The process is simple: turn off the pump, set the multiport valve to “backwash,” turn the pump back on, and let it run until the sight glass runs clear (usually 2–3 minutes). Then shut off the pump, switch to “rinse,” run for 30 seconds, then back to “filter” and you’re done. That’s it about every week or two in heavy use.

If the pressure stays high after backwashing, the sand might be channeled or dirty. That’s when you use a sand filter cleaner (degreaser) or do a deep clean with a filter cleaner solution. But I’d try backwashing twice first. Most people don’t do it aggressively enough.

Once a year you might need to replace some sand—about 10% loss is normal. Otherwise, backwashing is your whole routine.

Don’t skip the rinse step. It saves you from blowing dirty water back into the pool.
