Bake your silicone liners to kill smells for good

The best way to handle smelly or moldy silicone lunch box liners is to wash them well, then bake them in the oven.

Silicone isn’t really porous, but it does trap oils and food residue in its surface texture. That’s where the smell comes from, and that greasy film is also where mold finds a foothold. A regular dishwashing cycle just doesn’t get deep enough.

Here’s the routine: wash with hot soapy water, or use a baking soda paste on any stained areas. Rinse completely. Then pop the liners in a 300°F (150°C) oven for 15–30 minutes on a baking sheet. The heat burns off the trapped oils and kills anything alive in there. Let them cool before you use them again.

You don’t need to bake them every day. Only when they start smelling funky or you spotted mold. For daily maintenance, just be thorough, and make sure they’re fully dry before you store them. A damp liner sealed in a drawer is how this whole problem starts.

Your lunch shouldn’t taste like last Tuesday’s hummus.
