Baking soda and sunlight beat bleach for stinky lunch boxes
Baking soda and sunlight are the best natural way to get odors out of a plastic lunch box. Plastic is porous, so the smell is soaked into the material itself, not just on the surface. You need something that pulls odors out, not a cleaner that only masks them.
Start by washing the box normally with hot soapy water. Then make a thick paste of baking soda and a little water, smear it all over the inside, and leave it overnight. Rinse it out in the morning. For really stubborn smells (curry, old fish, forgotten leftovers), do a second round with a half-vinegar, half-water soak for an hour, then rinse and let it air dry completely.
After that, put the box in direct sunlight for a few hours. UV light kills the bacteria that cause the smell, and it works better than anything in a bottle. This is the step most people skip, and it’s usually the one that actually finishes the job.
One warning: don’t use bleach or harsh disinfectant wipes on plastic lunch boxes. The plastic can absorb those chemicals too, and then your sandwich tastes like a pool. If your box has a rubber gasket or seal, pop it out and treat it separately, because that’s where smells love to hide.
If you do this twice and the smell is still there, the plastic is probably compromised. Toss it. Or just get a glass container and stop fighting plastic altogether.
