Baking soda and sunlight will fix most lunch box smells, but if the plastic is old and scratched, the odor might be permanent.

That lingering smell is usually old food oils and bacteria hiding in micro-scratches and the rubber seal. Your regular rinse isn’t touching that. So hit it with a baking soda paste — mix a few tablespoons with just enough water to make a thick paste, coat the whole inside, and let it sit overnight. Scrub it out in the morning, rinse with vinegar, and wash with soap and water.

Then put it in direct sunlight for a few hours. UV light kills odor-causing bacteria and does what soap can’t. If your lunch box is an insulated bag, check if the liner comes out; if not, wipe it down with vinegar and air it out for a couple of days.

If it still smells after that, the odor is baked into the plastic. Time to retire it — years of use has earned it a rest. Future lunches deserve better than a box that smells like a gym sock.
