Baking soda beats every lunch box smell trick
The most effective way to get fish or curry smells out of a lunch box is a baking soda paste scrub, because the odor is baked into the plastic, not just sitting on the surface.
Wash the box with hot water and dish soap first to cut the grease. Then mix baking soda with a little water to make a thick paste, scrub the whole inside like you mean it, and leave it in there overnight. Rinse in the morning. That alone handles 90% of cases.
Why it works: plastic gets microscopic scratches over time, and odor molecules hide in them. Baking soda is a mild abrasive, so it physically scrubs those out, and it’s a base, so it neutralizes acidic odor compounds. For fish smells specifically, white vinegar is a great backup — wipe the inside down, let it sit for ten minutes, then rinse. Vinegar neutralizes the amines that make fish smell fishy.
Two more free tricks: leave the box open in direct sun for a day — UV kills the bacteria that keep smells going — or crumple a few sheets of newspaper inside and close the lid overnight. The paper soaks up the remaining odor.
Skip the fancy sprays and “specialized” deodorizers. Baking soda, vinegar, and sunlight cost nothing and actually work. This is not where you need to spend money.
