Baking soda plus sunlight fixes stinky lunch boxes
Baking soda and sunlight will fix a stinky lunch box, but you have to give them time.
First, wash the lunch box with hot water and dish soap — just like normal, but be thorough. Then dry it completely. This handles leftover grease and food residue, which is usually feeding the smell.
Once it’s dry, sprinkle a generous layer of baking soda inside, close it, and leave it overnight. If the smell is really bad, leave it for 24 hours. Baking soda is a solid, dependable odor absorber; it’s not magic, it just needs time to do its thing.
Sunlight is the other piece. UV light kills the bacteria that cause lingering smells, so set the empty box outside in direct sun for a few hours. I know it sounds like a mom trick, but it works — especially for plastic containers that have absorbed garlic or fish oil.
If the smell somehow survives both, make a paste of baking soda and water, rub it inside, let it sit for an hour, then rinse and wipe dry. Vinegar also works in a pinch, but you’ll be smelling vinegar for a bit, so baking soda is the better first move.
Wash and dry the box right after storing strong-smelling food next time, and you won’t have to do any of this. Future You deserves better.
