Bamboo beats wheat straw if you want it to last.

Bamboo fiber lunch boxes are sturdier and less likely to stain than wheat straw ones, so that’s the pick if you want something for daily use.

Both are basically plant fibers mixed with a binder, not the same as a raw bamboo carving. Wheat straw versions are lighter and cheaper, but they absorb oils and smells faster. Bamboo holds up better over a year of packed lunches. Either way, check the fine print: if it says “wheat straw + PP” or “bamboo + melamine,” it’s not going to compost in your backyard. It’s still better than virgin plastic, but don’t kid yourself.

Also, skip the ones with plastic lids if you’re trying to go full eco. Look for a tight-fitting silicone or bamboo lid, or just go stainless steel or glass if durability matters more. But if you’re set on the plant-fiber route: bamboo for the main compartment, wheat straw for the budget pick.

Buy the one you’ll actually use for a couple of years, not the one that feels green in the shopping cart.
