Beard sunscreen takes extra work.
Not perfectly, but you can make it work.
The problem is physical: hair blocks the sunscreen from reaching the skin underneath. A thick beard or mustache creates a barrier—cream just sits on the hairs and never touches the base. You’re essentially leaving the skin around your lips, chin, and cheeks exposed to UV.
The fix is twofold. First, use a lightweight lotion or gel, not a thick cream—it’ll spread through the hair more easily. Second, actually work it into the hair, parting it with your fingers to get to the skin. You’ll use more product than you think. Powders or mineral-based sprays can also help, but they’re less reliable for full coverage.
If you’re outside for more than 20 minutes, I’d add a wide-brimmed hat. That covers what the sunscreen misses.
Your beard shadows are not SPF.
