Bentgo is the lunch box to beat for microwave-safe inserts

Bentgo lunch boxes have removable, microwave-safe trays that pop out for cleaning, and they hold up way better than the cheap knockoffs.

The Bentgo Kids and the classic Bentgo trays lift right out of the shell, so you’re not hauling the whole box to the sink or the microwave. The tray itself is microwave-safe (just pop the lid off) and rinses clean in ten seconds, or sits on the top rack of the dishwasher if you’re lazy like me. The outer lunchbox stays basically brand new because the mess never touches it.

If you want a cheaper option, Sistema does the same trick — the inner compartment trays come out and are microwave-safe. They work fine, but the plastic feels thinner and the latches get flimsy after a few months. Glasslock also has glass inserts that microwave perfectly, but they’re heavy for a lunchbox, so I’d only go that route if you don’t mind carrying a brick.

One thing to check before you buy anything: make sure the insert is marked microwave-safe, not just the lunchbox. Some brands make the shell safe but the tray melty. Bentgo and Sistema both label them clearly.
