Bentgo Kids is the picky-eater lunch box I’d buy first: five separate compartments, a tight-sealing lid, and it’s cheap enough to replace without crying.

Picky eaters don’t usually need matching cartoon characters or built-in ice packs. They need their food to not touch. The Bentgo Kids has five shallow compartments — one big enough for a sandwich cut into strips, plus smaller wells for fruit, veggies, crackers, and a treat. The lid clicks down and keeps things from sliding around, and it’s dishwasher-safe top rack. That alone puts it ahead of a lot of fancy bento boxes.

If you want something that lasts from preschool to elementary and beyond, step up to a PlanetBox Rover or Launch. Stainless steel, more compartments, and it can handle a whole sandwich without the bread getting squished. But it costs three to four times as much as the Bentgo, and some kids find the latch harder to manage. For most families, the Bentgo is the right call because it works now, and you’re not out much if they lose it.

One warning: check the capacity. Bentgo Kids is around 4 cups — fine for a kindergartner, but a middle-schooler with a big lunch will need the larger Bentgo or a PlanetBox. And if your kid dips everything, the Yumbox has a separate compartment that genuinely won’t leak.

Future you can stop worrying about squished sandwiches. That’s worth something.
