Bento boxes are cute. Separate containers are smarter.

Multiple separate containers beat a bento box for most people, and it’s not close.

The big reason is the microwave. A bento box with dividers means you can’t reheat the rice without heating the salad. Separate containers let you nuke what needs nuking and leave the rest cold. That’s a daily convenience, not a niche one.

Bento boxes also suck to clean. The dividers trap sauce, the corners collect crumbs, and most aren’t dishwasher-safe. Separate containers stack flat, swap in and out, and if one cracks, you replace it for a few bucks instead of losing the whole system.

Where bento wins: portion control. If you overeat and need fixed compartments to keep yourself honest, the bento does the discipline for you. It also carries nicely in one hand and keeps stuff from sloshing together. Kids do well with them too, for the same portion reasons.

But for meal prep, reheating, and not losing your mind over Tupperware Tetris, the separate containers are the workhorses. Get a matching set, not a mixed drawer of chaos.

Future you will thank you when you can heat the curry without nuking the cucumber.
