Bento boxes are for Instagram. Meal prep needs glass rectangles.

For weekly meal prep, skip the fancy multi-tier bento boxes and buy five identical glass containers — they stack better, fit the fridge better, and actually survive the microwave.

Here’s the thing about those cute stackable bento sets: they’re sold as fridge organizers but they’re really lunchbox fashion. They’re tall, they waste shelf space, the compartments lock you into portion sizes you might not want, and sauce leaks between sections no matter what the ads say. Those multi-tier jars look great in a product photo and get annoying by Thursday.

What actually works is boring: a set of identical rectangular glass containers. Same size means they stack like bricks, and the uniform footprint means a whole week of lunches fits on one fridge shelf. Pyrex Simply Store (3-cup or 4-cup) and Snapware are the usual go-tos — oven, microwave, and dishwasher safe, lids don’t warp, and they don’t stain red from chili. If you’re carrying one in a bag and worried about leaks, Rubbermaid Brilliance is the plastic choice that’s actually leak-proof.

Buy 5–7 of the same container. Prep Sunday, stack two high, and you can see what’s inside without opening anything because the glass is clear. If you really want compartments, get one with a removable divider — not a bento.

Future-you on Thursday is going to thank you.
