Bento boxes beat plastic baggies

Bento boxes are the best lunch box for kids if you want to stop using disposable plastic bags.

The idea is simple: instead of a sandwich in a baggy, a few crackers in a baggy, and cut-up fruit in a baggy, you get a box with compartments and snap-shut lids. No wrapper needed. Just open, eat, and bring the box home. They’re sturdy, easy for little hands to open if you check the latch, and they make a regular lunch feel like a fancy snack tray. That last part is a genuinely useful trick.

If your kid is dead set on a character lunch box, you don’t have to fight it. You can still ditch the plastic bags by using a few small reusable containers, silicone cups, or even beeswax wraps. But seriously — a bento box is less stuff to keep track of, and it washes in one piece.

For encouraging waste-free lunches, make it a habit and make it their job. Pack together the night before so the kid picks what goes in, and let them close the latches. Teach the “pack it in, pack it out” rule — anything that doesn’t come home didn’t get eaten, and that’s a clue for next time. Keep a cloth napkin and a reusable fork in the box at all times so they don’t have to remember. Once it’s routine, it’s not a lecture, it’s just how lunch works.

Your kid will think they’re eating a treasure chest of little snacks. The only thing missing will be the crinkle sound of a plastic bag.
