Bento boxes work great for keto — just skip the rice

Bento boxes are actually perfect for low-carb and keto meal prep. The compartments do the portioning for you, and there’s no rule saying they have to hold rice or noodles.

The key is thinking of each compartment as a macronutrient slot. One big slot for protein: chicken thighs, ground beef, salmon, tofu, hard-boiled eggs. One medium slot for low-carb veg: roasted broccoli, cucumber slices, sautéed spinach, cherry tomatoes. One small slot for fat or sauce: avocado, cheese cubes, olives, or a little container of ranch or pesto. That’s a keto plate with built-in portion control.

For packing, go for a bento box with at least three sections — two smaller and one large. Fill the large one with protein first, then pack veg around it, then use the small well for fats and dips. Wet stuff goes in silicone muffin cups or little sauce jars so it doesn’t soak everything. And if you’re prepping several days ahead, avoid watery veggies like zucchini unless you’re eating them the same day — they get soggy fast.

No need to buy some special “keto” meal prep container. A regular bento box handles it fine. Just remember: bento is a format, not a menu.

Eat the colorful stuff first, and you’ll actually look forward to lunch.
