Big ice packs beat cute gel packs

The best lunch box ice pack is a big phase-change pack meant for coolers, not the little thin gel pouches. It stays cold longer and leaks less because it has more frozen mass and better sealing.

The trick is thermal mass. A small gel pack is mostly water in thin plastic — it warms up in a couple of hours. A proper phase-change pack, like Arctic Ice, uses a material that soaks up heat while it melts, and because it’s sold for coolers, it’s sealed to survive being tossed around. I would not worry about leaks with those.

If you want something small enough for a bento, the hard-shell Rubbermaid LunchBlox packs are practically leakproof. They just won’t last as long as a big cooler-style pack.

Also: don’t chase “colder than ice.” A pack that freezes way below 0°C thaws fast. You want one that holds right around freezing and melts slowly.

Get the biggest one that fits your lunch bag and freeze it flat. Future-you will appreciate it at 2 p.m.
